Shhhh.. don’t tell my trainer…

this past weekend, I indulged and had some picarones and sweet chancaca syrup, a popular Peruvian dessert while chatting with some Peruvian elders about their culture and traditions.

Even though they look like beignets or donuts, how they’re made is unique to the Peruvian culture.  The dough is made of either squash or sweet potato, and the syrup is made with chancaca, a brown type of sugar found in Peru.  The dough is pinched and stretched out into rings and fried until it’s a light golden brown.

Talking to the Peruvian elders made me realize that for modern couples looking to incorporate culture and tradition into their weddings, one of the easiest and most popular ways to incorporate culture so is through food.  Here’s a mini shoot with the picarones right before they disappeared.  YUMMY!

For example, placing the picarones in a small clear dessert bags and giving them away as wedding favors or setting up a dessert table with various cultural desserts with shots of milk and signage is an unexpected but interesting way to engage weddings guests and educate them about your culture and the foods.
