Michelle Obama truly is an inspiration. Who she is and how her personality translates into her sense of style fascinates people around the world.
When I found out about Gilt City’s New York launch event for Kate Bett’s new book
Everyday Icon, Michelle Obama and the Power of Style, I was excited. I was sure that a launch event celebrating Michelle Obama’s style would surely attract NYC’s most stylish fashionistas, especially since Kate Betts is currently a contributing editor at Time magazine and the former editor of Harper’s Bazaar and a former fashion news director at Vogue. The event took place at the fabulous
W Times Square and the place was decorated with large canvases highlighting some of Michelle’s key fashion pieces. A close friend accompanied me to the event and spoke to Kate Betts, who graciously autographed and personalized the books with our names.
Betts’ book details the fashion styles and designers of past first ladies and what they wore to key presidential events before delving into Michelle Obama as a person through candid stories, the impact of her classic yet down-to-earth style on various cultures and designers, lots of gorgeous photos and quotes like:
“The thing about fashion is you can use it to hide, but it’s only magic when you use it to express who you really are.” ~Karl Lagerfeld.
I’m definitely inspired to UP my style in a way that showcases who I really am.

Haile, hey! Loved attending the event with you.
Great photos, Petronella!
