As a photographer I love that I get to observe life happening and capture those intimate moments that no one else but me and one other person gets to see or experience.
At a recent gala event, I was photographing a jazz band playing during the dinner banquet. For some reason I was drawn to the sole guitar player; he was fast asleep but rapidly strumming his guitar and in that moment, only I knew he was asleep. I was thinking how talented he was to be asleep and still play, so I decided to photograph him.
Suddenly he heard me and his eyes snapped open. In that brief instant, our eyes met and we smiled at each other because he knew I knew that he had been fast asleep. There was unstated pact that I would never reveal his secret to anyone else. This was just between him and I.
I love that I was there to capture that moment and was privy to it. It’s these authentic, intimate moments that I live to capture.
