“Where are we going?” Evelyn asked.
We were in my car headed to the second back-up shoot location, but I was so deep in thought and excitement to get to the second location that I didn’t realize I hadn’t told Evelyn exactly where we were going. That happens occasionally, when I get in my focused-photographer-zone, and I’m chasing the light.
Sometimes I get a vivid picture in my head, and then I get consumed by how to make it come alive. Here’s that shot from Evelyn’s “You are Beautiful” portrait session just as the sun was setting.
I’m so thankful Evelyn completely trusted me with some odd locations (eg: abandoned parking lot in East Newark, New Jersey) that I chose for her portrait session.
I believe that who you really are and your beauty shines through in the most unexpected places, so I love it when clients go with the flow and are willing to try new and unexpected things or locations.
Ruojun “Evelyn” was born in China and recently moved to the United States to pursue her graduate studies. In person, she’s reserved, but very observant. As you can tell from her style (fashion details at the very end of this blog post), she’s an avid reader of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.
Right before the shoot she flipped through a magazine for inspiration, a little concerned she wouldn’t look like a model. Hard to believe right?? because she completely rocked her session by completely trusting herself, me and the process.
In fact, soonafter she saw her photos she sent me this email saying, “I LOVVVVVVE the photos!!!!!! OMG I am so beautiful!!!!!!!! HAHA!” She then said, you, “help ordinary people to find out their extraordinary beauty. You are great!”
What I saw in her that I didn’t think she saw in herself was her strong will and determination and fun, playfulness.
Evelyn has style and soul!
One of my favorites from our session is when I asked her about her boyfriend, she tried to hold it in, then burst into all kinds of giggles.
