Would you move 3000 miles away to a new country for love?
A few years ago, Crystal went on a vacation in Cancun, Mexico with a few girlfriends. One night while everyone else headed to bed, Crystal decided to hang out by the bar. She didn’t know that that night would change her life.
Alex, who is from Mexico, was working at the resort that night and saw her. He thought she was cute.
They both told me that they’re both shy, reserved people, but Alex decided to take a chance and casually asked if Crystal wanted to go dancing. That night they really hit it and agreed to stay in touch after Crystal left Mexico to go back to Chicago.
Several international phone calls later, Crystal decided to leave her blossoming investment banking job and move to Mexico to be with Alex. Since then, they’ve been together.
Culturally, it hasn’t always been easy. Alex is from Mexico and Crystal is from Chicago in the United States. At the resort where Alex works, he’s required to speak English and when he comes home, he has to speak more English. Crystal thinks having tacos for every meal gets old, but they use these cultural moments to playfully poke fun at each other.
I loved photographing Crystal and Alex while I was in Mexico. I thought it was so cool that they showed up at the resort on a motorcycle.
Even though we had only just met in person, I was struck by how quickly comfortable they expressed their love and playfulness for each other throughout the shoot. Loved photographing their Mexican – American love story.
