It’s weird being in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and seeing palm trees on the beach a few days before Christmas, but I’m savoring every moment with my family before I prepare to take off to Uganda. Our family and my sister’s in-laws decided to have an unconventional Christmas at the beach this year.
It’s Christmas Eve. I’m anxious and excited that I’ll soon be in my birthplace of Uganda with extended family, a place where it doesn’t take much to be happy. So my suitcase is packed with limited supplies of makeup, clothing, accessories… just the bare necessities.
I can’t wait for the incessant thoughts in my head to quiet down, to be awakened by the 5am rooster’s crow vs a fade in of Beyonce’s “Smash into You” via my iPhone alarm.
I look forward to the steady pelting sound of rain pounding on my aunt’s tin roof. Even sitting in complete darkness from 7pm until sunrise because on that day, there’s no electricity.
I’m excited to break up with my iMac for a few weeks. I know we’ll make up when I get back.
I can’t wait to eat real organic food, to feel the rush of the wind across my face as I ride on the back of a boda boda or mini motorcycle and to wake up to rolling hills of greenery galore and red soil…
To have 12hrs of daylight and 12hrs of nighttime every day of the year because Uganda is on the equator.
