It’s been awhile since I wrote a post about how to follow your dreams, but the topic has been heavy on my heart, so I’m reviving it and sharing what I’ve learned so far.
One of my clients recently asked me, “what’s it like to follow your heart and pursue what you’re passionate about?”
My answer: Well… it’s a combination of feelings: there’s the thrilling joy of unbridled creativity, tenacity and the possibility of breaking new ground, but then there’s also some risk-fear-uncertainty, like when you try something new and nothing happens, that kind of deafening silence that quietly slips in unnoticed & audaciously snuggles next to you.
But the gift is every time, you learn something new, you grow stronger in your truth and have a great support system, so you keep progressing, one tiny step… forward.every.time.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned in following my dreams is that you just have to keep moving forward with every new lesson, to learn and to grow.
Last week I met with a good friend who is doing big, revolutionary things in the marketing industry and is poised to change the game in a big way. We discussed what it’s really like to stand out, follow your heart and this particular quote by Theodore Roosevelt came to mind because the journey can be tough.
“It is not the critic who counts;
not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.
The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena,
whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood;
who strives valiantly;
who errs,
who comes short again and again,
because there is no effort without error and shortcoming;
but who does actually strive to do the deeds;
who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions;
who spends himself in a worthy cause;
who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement,
and who at the worst, if he fails,
at least fails while daring greatly.
It’s a great reminder that as your follow your dreams, especially when doubt or fear or uncertainty pop up, keep walking!
