Some of the most frequently asked questions I get from new and prospective portrait clients include what happens during the photo session.

What will happen during the shoot?
Where will the shoot take place?
Will you pose me?

So I decided to do this post to show some behind the scenes photos of how I shoot.  My style is a combination of photojournalistic and posed, which means that sometimes I pose people but usually, I’m looking to capture those unexpected in between moments: a glance, a smile…

When I book a client, I like to understand who they are, so I can plan the shoot and have a good sense of the vibe, location and style of the shoot.  My goal is to look for angles, lighting and settings that best compliment who you are and flatter your skin tones.  After that, my advice to all my clients is to have fun, trust me and the experience.

On the left is a photo of me shooting Ashley and on the right is the final edited image.  Having scouted the location a few days earlier, I knew that the sun set would provide a nice glow and hair highlight and make Ashley glow and make Ashley’s sequined dress shimmer.  Love that Ashley completely trusted me and climbed up under this gritty, rusty East Newark, New Jersey bridge in her purple stilettos like a queen, and she rocked the shoot!

Not sure exactly what I was doing here below, but it looks like I’m flapping my arms like a startled chicken…  Sometimes just for fun, I’ll do something silly to lighten up the mood.

Here’s another shot where I’m guiding Ashley into pose since we’d discussed earlier what look and vibe she was going for.

Thanks to my second shooter and assistant Vish for capturing these behind the scenes shots!
