You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.      ~Wayne Gretszky

A couple of years ago, a friend forwarded me a-once-in-a lifetime opportunity.  It was perfect and I knew that without a doubt, I was the perfect candidate.  To apply, I had to submit 5 essays. So I crafted my first 2 essays, then I refined, tweaked, checked and rechecked my essays.  I was focused on crafting the perfect essay.  The only problem is I missed the deadline.  OUCH!  That hurt!  They didn’t even get a chance to meet me.  I didn’t even get a shot.  When I saw the quote above on Lara Casey’s website, I incorporated it into my life philosophy.

Two nights ago while walking around my neighborhood, I photographed a soccer game.  I played soccer in high school and religiously watch World Cup Soccer, so I’m a bit of a soccer fiend, and it was hard to sit on the sidelines and not be in the game.  Even harder when I’d see a player with an opportunity to take a shot: would he take it or would he dribble and pass the ball missing his chance to score?

I definitely understand how fear and uncertainty can paralyze someone.  I’ve made mistakes and learned from them, and I know for sure that no matter what happens, the risk is always worth it.

In the end, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.  So take the shot!
