I really got to know Lilly when we were both bridesmaids at my best friend’s wedding in Bolivia a few years ago and we exchanged stories about life and love.
Lilly has a big heart and is kind, patient and has traveled all over the world including to my birth country of Uganda. So when she excitedly reached out to me for family photos, I knew I had to schedule a session with her family the next time I was in Washington D.C.
It was a hot and humid day, perfect for capturing Lilly and Oliver’s love story (una historia de amor apasionada) together with their daughter Lexi. Lilly is from Bolivia and Oliver is from Nicaragua, but they now live in the greater D.C. area. When we talked on the phone, Lilly very adamantly told me that she didn’t take very good photos, so I was surprised when she arrived looking radiant and stole the show with some natural, beautiful poses. Who says a 5month pregnant mommy can’t work it like Salma Hayek?
Oliver is from Nicaragua and though I’d only met him a couple of times, I always remembered what a gentleman he was at my best friend’s family events. It was truly beautiful to see him love on and interact with Lilly and Lexi. When I asked him how Lilly and him had met, I expected him to give me the concise “guy version” but he vividly recounted their love story, almost as if it had happened yesterday. They met 11 years ago when his teacher told him Lilly had a crush on him. After exchanging a few notes, this gentle, quiet high school student finally summoned the courage to pursue her and the rest is history. During the shoot, Oliver’s sister came up to me and told me how Oliver continuously courted Lilly with small gifts and surprises; one time he asked his sister to place a balloon in Lilly’s car so she would find it when she arrived… just because. Wow!
It was lovely to photograph Lilly and Oliver and to see how after 11 years together, their chemistry and love for each other is still “muy apasionada” (very passionate!). Stay tuned for pictures from the rest of their family photo session.
