Imagine being flown in for.the.day to hang out with your girlfriends… only to show up at the airport to grab a cab to Times Square only to find your boyfriend all dressed up and waiting for you. Johnny had arrived a day earlier to make sure everything was all set for the surprise Central Park proposal he’d planned together with The Heart Bandits. Johnny also knew how important it was to Elena’s Lebanese dad to get his blessing before proposing. So before proposing to Elena in Central Park New York, Johnny took her Lebanese dad out to lunch and told him, “I don’t want to date your daughter anymore.”
How did he propose?
Johnny: After four years of a committed relationship, I decided to ask Elena’s father for her hand in marriage. I took him out to lunch and I asked him, ” do you know why I asked you for lunch?” He replied no and I answered, “I don’t want to date Elena anymore.”
Her dad looked puzzled at me and replied, “ Does she know yet?” With anger engraved on his face, I couldn’t keep it in anymore; I replied “ I don’t want to date your daughter anymore because I want to marry her.” We both burst out in laughter and excitement and relief, of course.
Elena: Johnny’s sisters wanted to do a girl’s trip to New York to celebrate the end of the summer. I was most definitely on board. The girls and I spent the whole month planning our trip, but little did I know there was more to meet the eye.
On August 21st, Johnny made his way to New York to make sure everything was perfect in advance.
On August 22nd, I got off the plane and was making my way to catch a cab to go to Time Square to meet the girls since they were supposed to arrive a day before. I approached the door and there was Johnny all dressed up and as handsome as ever. I knew right there and then that the day was going to be special.
We made our way to the door to be picked up by a limo. We walked all over Times Square, and I was in complete awe of the city as it was my first time there. Then Johnny looked at me and said let’s go see Central Park. We walked through central park, until we got to a pathway of pink roses. I had no idea it was for us. I was like “Johnny be careful, where are you going?” At the end of the path, there was a lovely picnic set up for us. Johnny proceeded to explain every year we’ve been together, the good and the bad, and finally got on one knee said, “ Elena, will you marry me?” I was speechless when I saw the ring; it was the exact ring I had wanted. I leaned in to give him a kiss, and he replied, “ is that a yes”. I exclaimed, “ That’s a thousand yes’s”.

How did you meet?
The year was 2010 when we met through a friend and instantaneously we clicked. I was just finishing high school, and I took him to my prom. He is my high school sweet heart and the rest was history, as they would say.
When did you know he/she was the one?
Elena: I knew Johnny was the one when he started to become the best part of my day. No matter for how long how I saw him, I was always sad to say goodbye and would miss him. He was there for me as a best friend, as a teacher and my boyfriend all in one.. It’s true when they say: you just know when you’ve met the right one. Something inside of you just always lights up when you see them.
Johnny: I knew Elena was the one for me because no matter how much we fought she never gave up on me or on us. She was always there for me when I needed her the most and even when I didn’t need her. During the hardest moments of life, I would immediately think of her as I know she will be there for me no matter what.
What do you love about her/him? *
Elena: If I can summarize what I love about Johnny in one word, it would be “everything”. When we first met, I was attracted to his laugh, I was always looking forward to hear it. As years progressed, I fell in love with his grin that he puts on his face when he is up to something like trying to surprise me, in which I know he can’t hold it in (lol). Just like for the proposal, I knew he was up to something but I did not think it was going to be this!
Johnny: I love everything about her including the way she cries because she has this little pout to her that is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. I love how she makes me laugh when I’m angry or upset (well tries really hard to anyways).
What advice do you have to other guys when planning a proposal?
No matter how big or small of a proposal it is, always hire a photographer to catch the moment.
